Intercollegiate athletics has several primary goals: to allow student-athletes to pursue athletic excellence through competition; to teach leadership, teamwork and dedication to goals; to promote values of responsibility, discipline, courage, poise and the pursuit of excellence (the attempt to do one’s best); and to provide a fulfilling (fun) leisure activity for the student-athletes themselves as well as for their fans, other students, other members of the college community and members of the general public. As with some other extracurricular activities, intercollegiate athletics also offers participating students the opportunity to broaden their education by means of travel to other regions of the United States and potentially other countries.

The ultimate goal of each student-athlete should be to graduate with a degree in her/his chosen field. The intercollegiate athletics program should attempt to foster this goal in ways that (1) reflect the mission of the college, (2) foster the goals outlined above and (3) are fiscally responsible.

Intercollegiate athletic programs increase the visibility of the institution. This visibility can aid in student recruitment, financial development and the creation of goodwill between the college and the broader community. Therefore, the athletic programs should always represent the college with both integrity and the highest degree of sportsmanship.
