OLATHE, Kan. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Champions of Character founding partner Buffalo Funds present Buffalo Funds Five Star Awards for each of the NAIA’s 23 championship sports. Bethel College (Ind.) women’s golf team was recently awarded the Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for its dedication and implementation of the Champions of Character program’s five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. The Lady Pilots are led by head coach Danny Randolph.
“Character is revealed by what you do when no one is watching,” said Randolph. “I am confident that my team is consistently doing the right things when I am not around or watching.”
For the actions shown on the course many opposition coaches have complimented the Lady Pilots for their conduct and sportsmanship displayed throughout competition. The team holds themselves accountable for their character and commitments and set standards to rise to. In 2006, at the NAIA women’s golf national championship, sophomore Kara Bellinger called a penalty on herself.
“The girls on the team have fabulous character qualities. I trust that one is working hard on the practice range to better herself for competition. This has strengthened our team as a whole by leaving out reason to distrust or second guess a team member’s motivation toward improvement,” said junior Tricia Gregory. “Knowing that each member is practicing hard motivates everyone to strive harder. As each member improves, we all celebrate in her success, but strive harder to do well ourselves. This inner-team motivation has given us the ability to encourage one another in practice, but also strive to do our best at all times. Through this, we have grown to be a better team not just in scoring but also in unity.”
