OLATHE, Kan. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Champions of Character founding partner Buffalo Funds present Buffalo Funds Five Star Awards for each of the NAIA’s 23 championship sports. The Menlo College women’s basketball program was recently awarded the Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for the second consecutive year. The Lady Oaks, who compete in the California Pacific Conference, are led by head coach Caitlin Collier.

Menlo, singularly selected from 158 NAIA institutions that sponsor Division II basketball, was recognized for how the program’s core covenants reflect the NAIA’s ideals of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
Highlighting the Lady Oaks’ outstanding endeavors was a Free Throw-a-thon hosted by the program that raised more than $3,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in San Francisco, Calif.
As a team, members of the Menlo women's basketball program had a 3.3 grade point average, the highest in the program's history. Senior Amy Castillo and junior Sonet Yee were selected as 2006 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
A large group of Oaks are in leadership positions with various campus organizations. Castillo is the Student-Athlete Leadership Council Secretary and Latin Student Union President. Yee and Kepua Lee are both resident advisors on campus. Lee also serves as an Allocation Board member. Junior Felicia Thompson is the Black Student Union President and president of the Rize Dance Club. Junior Frances Sorenson serves as the SALC vice president as well as the junior class representative on the Student Government. Sophomore Stephani Kier joins Sorenson on the Student Government Council as the sophomore representative.
“We are extremely proud and honored to receive this award for the second year,” commented Collier. “This shows that winning championships and carrying ourselves with class and dignity can go hand in hand.”
