    Resources for Parents

Resources are available for parents who want to help their children become students and athletes of character. By implementing these suggestions, parents can better develop a relationship with their children, can change the culture of sport and develop a lifelong appreciation for great character traits enhanced by participation in sports.

    The Parent's Role
  • support and encourage your student-athlete
  • let the coach do the coaching
  • model good behavior

  • Learn more

Parents and coaches send powerful messages to students and those messages should be consistent. As part of the Champions of Character program, coaches and parents will be educated about their role in the student-athletes' experience.

Parents will learn how they can help their child's athletic performance, create good memories and demonstrate respect from the perspective of young people.

Contact the NAIA to inquire about speakers and presentations available for your parent meetings.

Some of the points addressed in this training include:

Help your athletes before, during and after competition.

    Before competition:

    • Know your student-athlete's goals, roles and needs, and respect them.

    • Release your student-athlete to the game, their coach and their team.

    During competition:

    • Model poise, confidence and appropriate behavior.

    • Focus on the team and the team’s goals.

    After competition:

    • Give your student-athlete all of the time and space they need.

    • Be a confidence builder.
