Region II Spring Players of the Week



May 1, 2007
Baseball - Player
J.P. Lapointe - Bethany University
Junior - Montreal, Canada

J.P. Lapointe was 17-for-23 (.739) with 12 runs, 9 RBIs, 3 doubles, 4 home runs and 4 stolen bases as Bethany went 4-2 last week. In a doubleheader split with Menlo, he was 5-for-9 with 2 runs, an RBI and a double. Then in a 4-game series with Cal State San Marcos, Lapointe was 12-for-14 with 10 runs, 3 doubles, 3 home runs, 8 RBIs and 4 stolen bases to lead Bethany to wins in 3 of the 4 games. In those 3 wins, he was 8-for-9 with 9 runs, 3 doubles, 2 home runs and 5 RBIs.

Baseball - Pitcher
Brandon Daily - California Baptist University
Junior - Corona, Calif.

Junior Brandon Daily worked a combined 6 innings of relief to pick up a pair of wins for No. 25-ranked California Baptist to move to 6-1 on the season.  In 1.2 innings at Vanguard, he earned the win giving up just 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 1.  Daily then worked 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 base runners while striking out 4, in a 4-3 win over No. 2 ranked Azusa Pacific.  He has allowed just 1 earned run in his past 27.1 innings (11 appearances).

Softball - Player
Sarah Jenson - Biola University
Junior - San Diego, Calif.

Junior Sarah Jensen went 9-for-12 (.750) at the plate, failing to reach base in only 3 of her 16 plate appearances as No. 17-ranked Biola split 4 conference games last week.  For the week she had 6 runs, a double, 3 RBI and 2 walks.  In the doubleheader losses to No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene, she went 5-for-7 with 2 RBI. In the sweep at Hope International, Jensen was 4-for-5 with 6 runs.  The only time she was retired against Hope International was a ground out which drove in a run.

Softball - Pitcher
Candice Thomas - California Baptist University
Senior - Barstow, Calif.

Senior Candice Thomas gave up just 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 and earned 2 shutout victories in 13 innings of work last week as No. 1-ranked California Baptist finished the regular season with 22 wins out of 24 conference games.  Thomas notched 8 shutout innings, scattering just 3 hits in the 3-0 extra-inning win over No. 8 Vanguard.  She then capped off the week with another 3-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory at Concordia to close out the regular season with 3 consecutive shutouts.

Brice Cutspec - Azusa Pacific University
Freshman - Westminster, Calif.

Brice Cutspec was 7-for-17 at the plate with 5 runs, 4 homeruns and 8 RBIs as No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific won all 4 of its conference games last week and clinched the GSAC championship.  In the 2 wins over Vanguard, he had 3 hits, 1 run, and 2 RBI.  Cutspec then led Azusa Pacific to a GSAC championship-clinching doubleheader sweep over No. 16-ranked Point Loma Nazarene, belting 4 home runs in the twinbill, all with 2 outs. Cutspec drilled 3 home runs in the first game, including the game-winning solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning. After Point Loma Nazarene struck first in the nightcap with a run in the fourth inning, Cutspec again provided the game-winning RBI with a 2-run home run. The doubleheader sweep extended the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Cougars' program-record win streak to 21 games, and it gave Azusa Pacific its 41st victory, another program record. The Cougars have won 18 straight GSAC games.

Taylor Cameron - Point Loma Nazarene University
Senior - Los Alamitos, Calif.

Senior Taylor Cameron went the distance, shutting out San Diego Christian 2-0. In nine innings of work, he allowed just 2 hits, walked 3, and struck out 8 batters to pick up his sixth win of the year.

Softball - Player
Rachel Bomgren - Vanguard University
Senior - Tustin, Calif.

Rachel Bomgren had 7 hits in 10 at bats (.700) and reached base in 13-of-16 plate appearances as No. 8-ranked Vanguard won all 4 of its GSAC games last week. Bomgren tallied 7 hits, including 4 doubles, 6 walks, and scored a team-high 8 runs.  She also stole a pair of bases, and made 7 putouts and 10 assists on defense with no errors in the 4 games.  In the doubleheader sweep at Azusa Pacific, she was 4-for-4 at the plate with 7 runs, 2 doubles, and 5 walks.  In the 2 wins over Hope International, she was 3-for-6 (.500) with 2 doubles, and a run scored.

Softball - Pitcher
Jennifer Olvera - Vanguard University
Junior - Gilroy, Calif.

Jennifer Olvera was the pitcher of record in all 4 Vanguard wins last week, 2 as a starter and 2 in relief, striking out 27 batters and allowing no runs in 15 innings. Olvera pitched a 5-inning 1-hit shutout in the first game at Azusa Pacific. She came back for 2 innings of hitless ball in game 2 as Vanguard came from behind for a 13-4 extra-inning win on the road. Olvera shutout Hope International on 2 hits, striking out 12 and walking none. She pitched a scoreless top of the seventh in game 2 with the Lions scoring the game-ending run in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 win and the sweep. As a hitter this week, she had 4 runs and 4 RBIs, including the game-winning run in the first game against Hope International.

Andy Reilly - Point Loma Nazarene University
Junior - Poway, Calif.

Andy Reilly had another big week as Point Loma Nazarene won 2-of-3 games. Over 3 games last week, he went 6-for-10 (.600), with 2 doubles, a triple, a home run, 3 runs and 6 RBI. Reilly was a pitcher last season but was moved into the Point Loma lineup as a third baseman in 2007, becoming the team's top offensive threat.

Jared Eskew - Point Loma Nazarene University
Sophomore - Bakersfield, Calif.

Jared Eskew improved to 5-1 on the year with a 3-0 shutout win over visiting Fresno Pacific. Eskew tossed 7 complete innings yielding just 3 hits, no walks while striking out 9.

Softball - Player
Amerra Kesterson - Biola University
Senior - Anaheim, Calif.

Amerra Kesterson was 15-for-26 (.577) at the plate in Biola's 8 games last week. For the week, she had 11 runs, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 4 walks, and 3 stolen bases.  On the Eagles' trip to Hawaii, Kesterson hit a home run in the sweep of BYU-Hawaii, scored a school-record 5 runs in a 5-inning win in the first of 2 wins over Chaminade HI, and had a triple, double, and stole 2 bases in the split with NCAA Division II No. 22 ranked Hawaii Pacific.  Back on the mainland, she had 1 run, 1 RBI, and a stolen base in the split with No. 7-ranked Vanguard.

Softball - Pitcher
Katie Gustaveson - Biola University
Senior - Lake View Terrace, Calif.

Katie Gustaveson won 4 games last week, striking out 21 batters in 29 innings and allowing just 2 runs in 5 starts. Pitching in her third game in as many days, Gustaveson threw a 3-hit shutout against NCAA Division II No. 22-ranked Hawaii Pacific, striking out 5 as Biola won 1-0. On Saturday, Gustaveson started both ends of the doubleheader against No. 7 Vanguard, earning the victory in game 2 after a no decision in the first game. On the day, she allowed no runs on 5 hits in 10 innings with 4 strikeouts.

Baseball - Pitcher
Kyle Thomas - California Baptist University
Senior - Riverside, Calif.

Kyle Thomas started and picked up the 4-3 win in a combined 5-hitter for California Baptist at No. 1-ranked Lewis-Clark State ID.  He gave up 1 earned run and 1 walk, while striking out 8.  Lewis-Clark State was held to its second-lowest hit total of the season and had its 9-game winning streak snapped.

Paige Powell - Point Loma Nazarene University
Junior - San Diego, Calif.

Paige Powell was 8-for-11 (.727) at the plate with a double, a home run, 8 runs scored, 6 RBI and 4 stolen bases as No. 4-ranked Point Loma Nazarene won all 4 of its non-conference games last week.  In the sweep of NCAA Division II No. 10-ranked Cal State San Bernardino on the road, Powell was 4-for-5 (.800), with 4 runs, 1 double, 1 home run, 3 RBI, 3 walks, and 3 stolen bases.  In the doubleheader wins over Cal Lutheran, she was 4-for-6 (.667) with 4 runs, 3 RBI, and 3 stolen bases.

Katie Gustaveson - Biola University
Senior - Lake View Terrace, Calif.

Katie Gustaveson tossed a 4-hit shutout as No. 16-ranked Biola ended top-ranked California Baptist's 33-game winning streak with a 2-0 win in the second game of a GSAC doubleheader.  Gustaveson allowed just 4 singles and struck out 4 batters to improve to 10-5 for the season with a 1.31 ERA.

Oscar Ochoa - Patten University
Senior - San Diego, Calif.

Senior Oscar Ochoa was 12-for-20 (.600) with 4 runs, 3 doubles, 2 triples and 9 RBIs to lead Patten to a 5-1 week. He also had 2 stolen bases. He had 3 multi-hit games, including a 4-for-5 effort with 3 runs, 2 doubles and an RBI in a 10-4 win over Cal State East Bay. Ochoa also went 3-for-4 twice, including once in a 10-1 win over Simpson when he had a double, a triple and 4 RBIs.

Steve Goins - California Baptist University
Junior - Riverside, Calif.

Steve Goins of California Baptist carried a perfect game into the sixth inning in tossing his second 9-inning, complete-game shutout in his past 3 outings Saturday against Fresno Pacific.  He limited the GSAC's third-best hitting team (.322) to just 3 hits.  Goins did not walk a single batter and struck out a career-high 14 batters.

Chantal Millard - California Baptist University
Junior - Riverside, Calif.

Chantal Millard was 6-for-14 (.429) with 7 runs, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 4 RBI, 1 walk, and 1 stolen base as No. 1-ranked California Baptist won all 4 of its games against ranked GSAC opponents last week.  In the sweep of No. 24 Concordia, she had 5 hits in 7 at-bats with 5 runs scored, a home run, 4 doubles, 3 RBI, and a stolen base.  In 2 shutouts of No. 5 Point Loma Nazarene, she had 2 runs, 1 home run, and 1 RBI.

Jennifer Olvera - Vanguard University
Junior - Gilroy, Calif.

Jennifer Olvera registered all 3 wins for No. 10-ranked Vanguard this week, pitching 2 complete games and making a late-game relief appearance in the other. She defeated No. 5-ranked Point Loma Nazarene 4-1, allowing only 4 hits and 1 unearned run, while striking out 10 Sea Lions. She also added a pair of hits and scored a run in the Point Loma double header. Olvera scattered 5 hits and 1 earned run, striking out 8, in Vanguard's 4-2 win over No. 24 Concordia. She came back in with 2 outs and 2 runners on base in the top of the seventh inning of game 2 and held the Eagles to push the game into extra innings. She earned the win as Vanguard came back with 2 runs in the bottom of the eighth for the 4-3 win. Olvera also scored the tying run for Vanguard.

Scott Hodsdon - Azusa Pacific University
Senior - Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Senior Scott Hodsdon was 12-for-27 (.444) at the plate as he led No. 3-ranked Azusa Pacific to a perfect 7-0 record as the Cougars played 7 games in 6 days. Eleven of Hodsdon's 12 hits were for extra bases, including 4 home runs and 7 doubles, and he drove in 15 runs on the week.  In 3 non-conference games at home against College of the Ozarks MO and Pace NY, Hodsdon recorded 5 hits in 10 at-bats, with 3 runs, 2 doubles, 1 home run, and 5 RBI.  In the doubleheader wins at Fresno Pacific, he was 5-for-9 (.556) at the plate with 3 runs, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, and  7 RBI.   He capped the week going 3-for-8 with 3 RBIs, including his 14th home run of the season in a doubleheader sweep at No. 9-ranked Biola.

Scott Hodsdon - Azusa Pacific University
Senior - Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.

Scott Hodsdon not only played well at the plate but also on the mound, earninh GSAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week to go along with his player-of-the-week honor.  In 10 innings of work, Hodsdon gave up 3 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 13, earning a save and a win.  He closed out both games of an 8-2, 8-7 GSAC doubleheader road sweep at Fresno Pacific with a combined 3 innings of hitless relief with 5 strikeouts, including a 2-inning save of the nightcap. On 2 days rest, Hodsdon then tossed a 7-inning complete-game 3-hit shutout in a 6-0 win at the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Biola, helping No. 3 Azusa Pacific post its 30th victory in just 34 games, the fastest 30-win pace in program history.

Chantal Millard - California Baptist University
Junior - Riverside, Calif.

Chantal Millard was 9-for-14 (.643) with 10 runs, 1 double, 2 home runs, 10 RBI, 4 walks, and 3 stolen bases as No. 1-ranked California Baptist won all 6 of its games last week.  In the sweep of visiting Dana NE, she had 2 hits in 3 at-bats with a home run, 4 RBI, and a stolen base.  In 4 wins at the Tucson Invitational against teams hailing anywhere from Oklahoma to Indiana, Millard was 7-for-11 (.636) at the plate with 7 runs, a double, a home run, 6 RBI, 2 walks, and 2 steals.

Amy Thomas - California Baptist University
Junior - Barstow, Calif.

Amy Thomas did not give up a run and allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk in 15.2 innings of work last week while striking out 19 and collecting 3 wins.  In the 5-inning complete game against Dana NE, she gave up 1 hit while striking out 7.  In 2 innings of no-decision work against Huntington IN, she gave up her only walk of the week while striking out 4.  Against MidAmerica Nazarene KS, she pitched another 5-inning complete-game shutout, giving up 1 hit and striking out 4.   In a 3.2-inning appearance against Science & Arts OK, she earned the win giving up 3 hits and striking out 4 again.  Thomas has extended her streak of innings pitched without allowing an earned run to 65. 2 frames.

Caleb Mintz - The Master's College
Freshman - Boise, Idaho

Caleb Mintz was 10-for-21 (.476) at the plate with 5 doubles, 4 runs scored, and 6 runs batted in as The Master's won 4-of-6 games last week.  In the sweep of Illinois Tech, Mintz was 4-for-6 at the plate with 2 doubles, 2 runs, and 2 RBI.  In the doubleheader losses to College of the Ozarks MO, he had 4 hits, 3 of which were doubles, and 2 RBI.  In the 2 wins over GSAC opponent San Diego Christian, he had 2 hits, 2 runs, and 2 runs batted in.  Mintz currently leads the Mustangs in 5 categories, including batting average (.356), hits (37), RBI (27), and slugging percentage (.529).

Steve Goins - California Baptist University
Junior - Riverside, Calif.

Steve Goins tossed a 1-hit shutout without allowing a walk while striking out 12 batters to earn the 9-innning complete-game win over conference opponent Vanguard.

Cassandrah Carreon - California Baptist University
Senior - Riverside, Calif.

Casandrah Carreon was 6-for-15 (.400) at the plate with 3 home runs, a double, 7 runs, and 10 RBI as No. 1-ranked California Baptist won all 6 of its games this week, including 4 against GSAC teams.  Carreon went deep in each doubleheader, with 2 RBI against Azusa Pacific, 4 RBI against visiting Concordia NE, and 4 more RBI in the sweep at Hope International.  California Baptist outscored its opponents 60 to 2.

Katie Gustaveson - Biola University
Senior - Lake View Terrace, Calif.

Katie Gustaveson threw a 5-inning no-hitter and a 2-hit shutout earning a pair of wins in her 2 appearances this week.  For the week, she struck out 17 batters.  Gustaveson struck out 10-of-16 batters she faced in her no-hit win over Macalester MN at the Sun West Tournament, earning her second no-hitter of the season.  Against No. 10-ranked Concordia, she struck out 7 and allowed 2 early singles. She then retired the last 11 batters of the game in the 6-0 win for No. 21 Biola.
