Meriwether received an Associate of Arts degree from Martin Methodist College (Tenn.) before continuing his education at Athens State College (Ala.), graduating in 1978 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. During his college years,
he played first base for the baseball team and served as the manager and trainer for the men's basketball team.
Meriwether became interested in umpiring after reading a print ad for an umpire school and became an umpire for Major League Baseball in 1993 in the American League. Since then, he has worked two MLB All-Star Games (1996, 2002) and five Division Series (1998, 99, 2000, 01, 02). His latest honor came in 2004 when he worked the 2004 World Series.
Meriwether's accolades include the Chauncey DeVault Memorial Award from Harry Wendelstedt School for Umpires and he was inducted into the Martin Methodist Hall of Fame in 2001. He was also appointed Consultant for Social and Cultural Diversity for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in that year.
Currently residing in Nashville, Tenn. with his wife Curline and children Jeremy and Christopher; Meriwether works with the Children's Ministry and is a trustee at the Fifteenth Avenue Baptist Church. He also serves as a motivational speaker for youth and civic groups. His hobbies include watching basketball and listening to jazz.
