Born Dudley Michael Hargrove, Mike was a three sport star at Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Excelling in football and basketball, he made his professional career in the sport of baseball. Drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 25th round of the 1972 draft, Hargrove reached the Majors two years later and was voted the American League Rookie of the Year.
During his 12 seasons in the Majors with Texas, Cleveland and San Diego, Hargrove played in 1,666 games and collected 1,614 hits for
a .290 batting average. He hit 80 home runs and had 686 RBIs.
After retiring from playing in 1985, Hargrove parlayed his playing experience into a successful coaching career. The 2006 season marks his 15th in the Majors as a manager and second at the helm of the Seattle Mariners. Prior to Seattle, Hargrove wore the skipper's hat for Cleveland (1991-1999) and Baltimore (2000-2003). His career record stood at 1065-1056 (.502) prior to this season.
Hargrove is a member of the Northwestern Oklahoma State Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame.
