NAIA National Players of the Week



Casey Trambly of Hastings College (Neb.), Jared Ratzlaff of McPherson College (Kan.) and Phil Schroer of Nebraska Wesleyan University were named the NAIA offensive, defensive and special teams football players of the week, respectively, for Saturday, October 8, 2005.

Trambly, 6'4", 204-lbs, led a Hastings offense that controlled the ball for 40 minutes in a 43-21 win against Dana College (Neb.). The senior quarterback threw for 132 yards (9-for-12) and rushed for another 114 yards on 17 carries. Trambly threw for one score and rushed for three more as the Broncos improved to 2-3 on the year.


Hailing from Fredonia, Kan., Ratzlaff recorded 10 total tackles in McPherson's 28-21 victory against Friends University (Kan.). The senior linebacker has one tackle for a loss and recovered a fumble for a 56-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs advanced to 4-1 on the season.

Schroer, a 6'2" freshman, helped Nebraska Wesleyan to a 19-12 overtime victory against Doane College (Neb.). The Lawrence, Neb. native blocked a PAT that was returned for a two-point defensive conversion in the first quarter. Later in the first quarter, he recovered a fumble on a punt return which resulted in a Nebraska Wesleyan field goal. With the score tied 12-12, Schroer blocked a 31-yard field goal attempt to send the game into overtime. The Prairie Wolves improved to 4-2.

Soccer Honors

Dusty Green of William Jewell College (Mo.) and Maria Ruiz of  Park University (Mo.) have been named the NAIA Men's and Women's Soccer National Players of the Week for the week ending October 9, 2005.

Green recorded 11 points in William Jewell's two victories on the week.  He netted a goal and assisted on another in a 3-2 victory against then- #23 Baker University (Kan.).  The junior midfielder registered a hat trick and assisted on two other goals in an 8-0 victory against Culver-Stockton College (Mo.)  The Kansas City, Mo. native helped the Cardinals improve to 6-4-1 overall.

A native of Madrid, Spain, Ruiz led Park to a 2-0 record on the week with six goals and three assists.  Ruiz scored four goals against Oklahoma Wesleyan University and added two assists in the 10-0 win.  The sophomore forward netted two more goals and one assist in a 5-1 win against Central Christian College (Kan.) as the Pirates improved to 7-5-2.  Ruiz now has 20 goals on the season.

Volleyball Honors

Luren Baylon of Iowa Wesleyan College, Juliana Todescan of John Brown University (Ark.) and Amy Eckenfels of Campbellsville University (Ky.) were named the NAIA Volleyball Player, Setter and Libero of the Week, respectively, for the week ending October 9, 2005

Hailing from Lima, Peru, Baylon led Iowa Wesleyan with 5.51 kills per game (.462) in two matches.  The senior middle hitter recorded 13 digs and six aces as the Tigers posted 3-0 wins against Viterbo University (Wis.) and St. Ambrose University (Iowa). Iowa Wesleyan improved to 12-6 on the season.

Todescan, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil averaged 14.63 assists per game to help John Brown to two victories on the week.  The setter also recorded 20 digs and 10 kills in victories against College of the Southwest (N.M.) (3-0) and University of Texas-Permian Basin (3-2).  John Brown improved to 20-4 overall.

A junior from Louisville, Ky., Eckenfels helped Campbellsville to a 3-3 record on the week.  The libero averaged 9.9 digs per game, including two matches with 45 and 52 digs, to etch her name in the NAIA Top 10 list of most digs in a match.  Eckenfels has had four matches this season with more than 40 digs.  Campbellsville is currently 16-7 on the season.
