A native of La Grande, Oregon, Dr. David Huber graduated with a bachelor's degree in physics from Eastern Oregon University in 1974. Huber then earned his doctorate in electrical engineering with a minor in physics from Brigham Young University. In 1989, after working at several different optical communications development jobs, Dr. Huber was hired by General Instrument Corp., where he managed the lightwave research and development program.
Dr. Huber left General Instrument and founded Ciena in 1991 and then created NOVA Telecommunications Inc. in 1997, later known as Corvis Corporation. Corvis, which provided optical networking products, diversified its business in 2003 and changed its name to Broadwing Corporation. Dr. Huber is currently the Chairman and CEO of Broadwing, which delivers innovative data, voice and media solutions to enterprises, service providers and government entities.
For his achievements and dedication to Eastern Oregon, Dr. Huber received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002.
