CHATTANOOGA, TN - The King College Women's Soccer Team traveled to Chattanooga, TN this weekend to play in the Region XII tournament hoping to add to what has already been a memorable season. The Lady Tornado put together two solid performances and captured it's first ever Region XII Championship. With the win, King will head to Daytona Beach, FL to compete in the NAIA National Championship.
The game started with a high tempo as the Lady Tornado immediately put the pressure on Covenant (Ga.). King got on the scoreboard first with a fine finish by freshman, Maggie Lynskey. Emma Wells swung in the corner kick that was flicked on by senior, Laura Kilgus which fell to Lynskey to crash the ball home from inside the box. Covenant pressed to find an equalizer before half time and came close when Kalie Estrada struck the post from a tight angle.
After the break Covenant continued to push on to find the back of the net, but the Lady Tornado refused to crack and showed why they have only conceded 12 goals this year. At the 87th minute, junior Sara Ham ran onto a Laura Kilgus through ball and scored increasing the King lead to 2-0. With 20 seconds remaining, senior Mary Alice Rowney ended the game with a superb finish by netting a goal from just inside the 18-yard box. With the win, the Lady Tornado clinched its first Region XII Championship.
"What a game to be involved in," Coach Swan said. "I thought we were first class today in everything that we did. Karmin and the back line today were superb. The midfield and forwards worked tirelessly for every ball. Our fans were first class today and we would like to thank all of them for their support this year. It's hard to travel down to Chattanooga and come out on top. It's a tough place to play, so hats off to the Ladies."
The Tornado will now move on to play at the NAIA National Tournament in Daytona Beach, FL November 14th - 20th. The seeding will take place Thursday 6th November.
