Basketball has always played a major role in Rick Stansbury's life. Before stepping into the coaching role, Stansbury led the Campbellsville University (then Campbellsville College) Tigers to the 1979 KIAC Tournament Championship, a regular-season league title in 1980, the school's first District 32 crown and an appearance in the 1981 NAIA National Tournament.
Stansbury was a four-year letterman, dominating as a national backcourt performer. He averaged 12 points a game during his senior season as a Tiger. After his senior season, Stansbury stayed on for the following season as a student assistant for the late Lou Cunningham.
Stansbury went on to be a graduate assistant at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Ky. and an assistant coach at Austin Peay State University. He also served as an assistant coach at Mississippi State University before taking over the head coaching duties in 1998.
Now in his eighth season as head coach of the Bulldogs, Stansbury ranks third in the MSU career coaching mark with a record of 149-75 before the start of the 2005-06 season. He led the squad its fourth straight NCAA Tournament berth during the 2004-05 season. He was named the SEC's Coach of the Year for the 2003-04 season and became the first coach in the history of Mississippi State's basketball program, a history of 93 years in the making, to have four consecutive 20-win seasons.
Stansbury was inducted into the Campbellsville University Hall of Fame in 2002 and was a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999.
