Brian Hamil, National Chair of Biomedical Services for the American Red Cross, will provide an overview of the NAIA-American Red Cross Youth Leadership Program. Brian will highlight first-year successes, expectations for the program’s second year, and how the program successfully integrates with the Champions of Character initiative.

Representatives from some of the NAIA’s most active Champions of Character Program Centers will lead a discussion on Program Center best practices. Whether your institution has a Program Center in place or is considering becoming more involved, this is a great opportunity to learn more about specific ideas that have sparked interest on campus and in the local community.

Bruce Brown, NAIA Special Presenter, will present selected foundational messages for Champions of Character. This session is ideal for individuals for new to Champions of Character, and provides and excellent refresher for program veterans, too!

Champions of Character: Assessing Character in Sports on Campus

Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Doty, United States Military Academy
Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Doty, Professor of Character Development at the United States Military Academy, will discuss his research into Character within the Competitive Sports program at the Academy and share best practices for assessing character within competitive college sports programs. Lieutenant Colonel Doty's research has been published in the Journal of College and Character and presented at the 2007 American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation National Convention.

Champions of Character Workshop – Standards and Actions Plans

The NAIA Council of Presidents has directed that minimum standards be developed in four key areas, including Champions of Character. National Office staff members will provide an update on the process in place to develop minimum standards for Champions of Character and outline proposed standards in this critical topic area.
