KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Morningside (Iowa), the only undefeated team in Division II, is No. 1 for the first time in the fourth regular season installment of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Basketball Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, announced today (Jan. 16). Sitting 18-0, the Mustangs leaped up to the top spot after two big wins last week and former No. 1 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) falling twice within a span of three days.
MC, who earned all 16 first-place votes and 480 total points, has won this season in convincing fashion. In the last four games, the Mustangs have won by an average of 21 points --- on the season, they hold a +19.1 scoring margin. Morningside will have its perfect record put to the test with a contest at No. 22 Hastings (Neb.) Jan. 19.
Walsh moves up two places to No. 2 as the Cavaliers have won six straight. Embry-Riddle (Fla.), Evangel (Mo.) and Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) all move up this week in Nos. 3-5, respectively.
No. 24 Ottawa (Kan.) is appearing in its first Top 25 poll this season while No. 25 King (Tenn.) gets back into the ranking after a four-week hiatus.
Last week's No. 1 team, MidAmerica Nazarene, falls to No. 8.
The fifth regular season Top 25 poll is scheduled to be released Jan. 23.
