KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Morningside (Iowa) is No. 1 in the fifth installment of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Basketball Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, announced today (Jan. 23). The Mustangs, who earned all 17 first-place votes, won a key road contest against then-No. 22 Hastings (Neb.) coming back from a 14-point second half hole. At 20-0, MC is the lone undefeated team in the Division II ranks and takes on No. 24 Dordt (Iowa) on Wednesday and Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday.
Walsh (Ohio) stays at No. 2 winning twice last week against Top 25 opponents. Evangel (Mo.) moves up one spot to No. 3 and former No. 1 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) climbs up four holes to No. 4. No. 5 William Penn (Iowa) rounds out the Top 5. The Statesmen of WPU have tied a school record with 11 straight wins, not losing in nearly two months.
Five teams hop into the poll this week after receiving votes in the last poll: No. 19 Warner Southern (Fla.), No. 21 Warner Pacific (Ore.), No. 23 Jamestown (N.D.), No. 24 Dordt (Iowa) and No. 25 Bluefield (Va.). The Defenders of Dordt have won five games in-a-row and will attempt to knock off No. 1 Morningside tonight.
