HUNTINGTON, Ind. - No. 24 Huntington's (Ind.) Tyler Shively's two free throws with 3.4 seconds left in the game was enough to put the Foresters (17-8, 7-4) over the top for the 73-72 win over NAIA 11th-ranked Bethel (Ind.) College (20-5, 8-3) on Saturday (Feb. 2). It was the first time HU had the lead in the final nine minutes of play.
The match-up between the two ranked teams lived up to its billing that was tight throughout and one that came down to the wire. The Foresters led by as many as six in both halves and were up 33-30 at the break. The Pilots' biggest lead in both periods was five including a 63-58 advantage with 6:16 remaining in the game.
HU cut it to two on several occasions down the stretch and sliced it to one at 72-71 on a Doug Sheckler trey with 31 seconds left. Sheckler then stole the ball from Wes Laidig on Bethel's next possession, but the Foresters gave it right back when Shively was whistled for a charge at the other end. HU immediately fouled William Walker who left the door open for the Foresters by missing both charity tosses.
Luke Smith grabbed the defensive rebound and set up Shively's heroics. Shively shot-faked, took a dribble and put up the shot. Bethel's Tyler Brown was called for the foul with 3.4 ticks left. Bethel got the ball in the paint for a final chance to win it, but Brown's shot was off the mark.
Sheckler's double-double took game-high honors with 30 points and 10 boards for HU. Kellen Zawadzki added 11 points and Kevin Kyle finished with 10 for the Foresters. Ryne Lightfoot led Bethel with 25 points and Walker chipped in 19.
