MITCHELL, S.D. -- Junior Preston Broughton reached 1,000 career points as he led the No. 8 Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team to an 84-67 victory over Dana College on Sunday (Feb. 9) in GPAC action at the Corn Palace.
Junior Ike Muoneke had a huge dunk on Wesleyan's first possession of the game and connected on two layups to help the Tigers to an early 19-8 lead at the 14:27 mark. Wesleyan quickly increased that lead to 17 points after jumpers by Colby Fitzgerald and Broughton with 11:30 to play in the first half. The Vikings finished out the last four minutes of the first half on a 10-3 run and trailed by only eight points at the half.
Broughton scored the Tigers' first seven points of the second half to put the lead at 10 points with 18 minutes to play in the game. Dana cut the lead to just two points with 10:30 to play, but a layup by Broughton, two free-throw shots by Brady Wiebe, and a 3-point shot by Marcus Vontz put the Tiger lead back up to seven points. Wesleyan finished the game outscoring the Vikings 20-10, including 8-12 from the free-throw line.
The Tigers had two players finish with double-doubles. Broughton had 27 points and 13 rebounds, and Wiebe came off the bench for 15 points and 12 rebounds. Fitzgerald was the only other DWU player in double figures, finishing with 15 points.
The Vikings were led by Eric Maassen who finished with 20 points and nine rebounds. Gabe Bross also ended in double figures, adding 15 points and seven rebounds.
DWU out rebounded Dana 43-36 and had 14 player fouls compared to the Vikings' 25 fouls.
The Tigers are on a six-game winning streak and improve their overall record to 22-5 with a 12-3 GPAC record, and Dana College falls to 12-15 overall and 5-10 in GPAC play. Wesleyan sits in second place in the GPAC standings and has only a half-game lead over Northwestern College and Dordt College.
DWU will look to extend its current winning streak on Wednesday, Feb. 13 when the Tigers travel to Orange City, Iowa, to take on No. 19 Northwestern.
