POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The first day of the 16th Annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship saw three seeded teams lose in the opening round. The 2007 event is being held at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).
The day opened with eighth-seeded Walsh (Ohio.) defeating King (Tenn.), 78-69. The Cavaliers will face unseeded Cornerstone (Mich.), who registered the first upset of the day with a 74-60 win over #9 seed University of Sioux Falls (S.D.).
Top-seeded Belleuve University lived up to their seeding as they advanced to the second round with a 95-54 victory over Fisher College (Mass.). The Bruins will face #16 Northwest (Wash), one of four Cascade Collegiate Conference teams in the tournament field. Northwest defeated Holy Names (Calif.) by the final score of 86-74.
#6 Kansas Wesleyan knocked off Bluefield College (Va.), 92-77, to advance to the second round. The Coyotes will face 11th seeded Northwestern College (Iowa) who defeated Albertson College (Idaho) in the final game of the day, 99-77.
Unseeded Spalding University (Ky.) recorded the biggest upset of the tournament as they knocked off #3 Point Park (Pa.), 78-63. Sophomore guard Chartea'l Hall keyed the upset with 27 points and 16 rebounds. The Golden Eagles will face College of the Ozarks, who upset #14 St. Francis (Ind.), 96-59.
The 32-team, single elimination tournament continues Thursday, March 8, with the remaining eight games of the first round. Friday features eight games in the second round, with the quarterfinal round on Saturday. The semifinal round will begin on Monday, March 12, followed by the championship game on Tuesday, March 13 at 8:30 pm.
