The second round of the 15th Annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship saw top seeded Embry-Riddle University fall to #16 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio). Unseeded MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) was also one of eight teams to advance to the quarterfinal round, which begins on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. The 2006 event is being held at Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks (Mo.).
The day opened with a come-from-behind overtime victory for eighth-seeded Lindenwood (Mo.) as they defeated ninth-seeded Taylor 74-71. The Lions took the lead for the first time in the overtime period and held on to advance to their first national quarterfinal appearance. They will play #16 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio), who registered the biggest upset of the tournament as they knocked off top-seeded Embry-Riddle (Fla.) 84-78. The American Mideast Conference tournament champions will play in their first quarterfinal since 1998.
Two teams that registered upsets in the first round met in the second game of the day as unseeded MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) defeated unseeded Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) 66-57. The Pioneers, who knocked off #6 Indiana Southest in the first round, will play #3 and defending champion Walsh University (Ohio). Walsh defeated #14 Oregon Tech 81-66 in a rematch of last year's final four meeting. The game was also a meeting between the last two national champions (Walsh in '05 and Oregon Tech in '04).
Fifth-seeded Mayville State University (N.D.) defeated unseeded Montreat College (N.C.) 99-92 in a fast-paced, high-scoring affair. The Comets, champions of the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament, are making their second trip to the Elite Eight. They will play the host school, fourth-seeded College of the Ozarks (Mo.), who defeated 13th-seeded William Jewell (Mo.) 77-76 in front of a capacity crowd of 3,900. Senior Andrew Boyce sank a pair of free throws to give Ozarks the one point victory and berth in the Elite Eight.
Second-seeded Huntington University (Ind.) jumped out to a big halftime lead and held off 15th-seeded Evangel University (Mo.) 104-93 in the highest scoring game of the tournament thus far. Junior Alex Kock scored 36 points, his second straight 30+ game, to lead the Foresters into the quarterfinal round for the third time since 2000. Huntington is also leading the tournament in points per game with 101.5 and topped the century mark for the first time in the 2006 tournament. They will face 10th-seeded Morningside College (Iowa) who recorded a minor upset over seventh-seeded Warner Pacific College (Ore.) 71-68 in the final game of the second round. The Mustangs reach the Elite Eight in their first ever trip to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship.
The 32-team, single elimination tournament continues with the quarterfinal round on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 1:00 pm. The semifinal round will begin on Monday, March 13, followed by the championship game on Tuesday, March 14 at 8:30 pm.
