KANSAS CITY, Mo. - For the first time this season, one team is the unanimous pick for No. 1 as Mountain State University (W.V.) maintains its hold as the best team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Basketball Division I Top 25 Coaches' Poll, announced today (Jan. 30). MSU has been No. 1 in all regular-season polls (six total), but this is the first time the Cougars earned all 11 first-place votes. The Cougars posted 10 first-place votes on two occasions this year.
Mountain State is closely followed by No. 2 Georgetown (Ky.) with a mere 15 points separating the two teams. No. 3 Concordia (Calif.), No. 4 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 5 Louisiana State-Shreveport all stay within the Top 5 again but shuffle a bit from last week. LSU-Shreveport fell two spots after it had its 17-game winning streak snapped in the 75-72 loss to then-No. 18 Xavier (La.) (Jan. 23).
Two teams made considerable leaps up seven spots, No. 10 Pikeville (Ky.) and No. 16 Cumberland (Tenn.). Pikeville has won 14 straight games while the Bulldogs of Cumberland have won six of their last seven (heading into this poll) including a win at No. 8 (tie) Lambuth (Tenn.) on Jan. 19.
Of the three teams still undefeated, Mountain State, Georgetown and Lee, Georgetown faces perhaps the stiffest of challenges. Georgetown hosts No. 10 Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday before traveling to Cumberlands (Ky.), who is receiving votes, on Saturday.
Two teams enter the Top 25 for the first time all season, No. 22 Wayland Baptist (Texas) and No. 23 Shorter (Ga.).
