Mike McCarthy, a 1986 graduate of Baker University (Kan.), is the newest head coach in the NFL, taking over at the helm of the Green Bay Packers.
Last season, McCarthy was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. He joined the San Francisco staff after serving as the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator since 2000. No stranger to the Green Bay area, he served as the Packers' quarterbacks coach in 1999 under Ray Rhodes.
Throughout his college and pro coaching career, McCarthy has worked with quarterbacks Jeff Blake, Marc Bulger, Aaron Brooks, Jake Delhomme, Brett Favre, Rich Gannon, Elvis Grbac, Matt Hasselbeck, Joe Montana, and Alex Van Pelt. He spent six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, serving as quarterbacks coach the last four of his years with the team.
McCarthy was a member of the Baker national runner up team in his season senior, playing for legendary College Football Hall of Famer Charlie Richards. A tight end, McCarthy was an all-conference selection (1985-86) for the Heart of America Athletic Conference. After his playing career, McCarthy joined the coaching staff at Fort Hays State University (Kan.) as a graduate assistant from 1987-88.
