2008 NAIA Football Season Report #1
There are many impact games heading into the third weekend of NAIA football. Two Top 25 battles highlight the slate, No. 13 Northwestern (Iowa) at No. 7 Morningside (Iowa) and No. 18 Black Hills State (S.D.) at No. 15 Northwestern Oklahoma State. Also, defending national champion and No. 1 Carroll (Mont.) is looking to better its 17-game winning streak. The Fighting Saints will have to do so with a true freshman quarterback making his first career start Saturday (Sept. 13) against Rocky Mountain (Mont.).
No. 8 St. Xavier (Ill.) has to be ready for an upset alert. SXU travels to St. Francis (Ill.) tonight (Sept. 11). USF took out NCAA FCS member Valpairaso (Ill.) 21-0 on Sept. 4. The shut-out was the Saints' first in 77 games and also handed them a three-game winning streak (dating back to 2007) for the first time since 1995.
Northwestern (Iowa) head coach Orv Otten is closing in on 100 career wins. He could hit the century mark with a victory over No. 7 Morningside (Iowa) this Saturday. With the win, he would become the 13th active coach to hit 100 career tallies. Two other coaches have a shot at the century club this season: Dale Carlson of Ohio Dominican stands with 97 wins while Monty Lewis of Friends (Kan.) sits with 94.
