KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The fifth 2007 NAIA weekly football awards were handed out and these student-athletes were honored: Derek Doerfler of Baker (Kan.) was named NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week, Kyle Lockett of Urbana (Ohio) was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week and Jared Stace of Ohio Dominican was named NAIA Offensive Player of the Week, for the week ending on Sunday, Oct. 7.
Doerfler, a 5-11, 211 lb. junior placekicker from Lee's Summit, Mo., provided all the scoring in Baker's 15-13 win over William Jewell (Mo.). He made good on five-of-six field goal attempts including a 62-yarder with :48 seconds remaining to provide the difference. He also hit from 53 yards, 32, 27 and 20 on the day. On kick-offs, Doerfler averaged 67.5 yards and pushed four of his six kicks into the end zone for a touchback. He leads NAIA with 12 field goals and 2.0 per game.
Lockett, a 6-4, 308 lb. senior defensive tackle from Pleasantville, N.J., was a major factor in No. 24 Urbana totaling 10 quarterback sacks in the 9-6 win versus No. 15 Walsh (Ohio). He posted 13 total tackles including six solo as the Blue Knights defeated Walsh for the first time in school history. Lockett finished with two sacks and his second one came on Walsh's last drive of the game on third-and-long. His sack forced a fourth-and-34 under a minute remaining. Walsh could not convert and Urbana took over on downs and improved to 5-1 for only the second time.
Stace, a 5-9, 185 lb. senior wide receiver from Whitehall, Ohio, scored the game-winning touchdown with under a minute remaining in No. 4 Ohio Dominican's 42-41 win at No. 2 St. Xavier (Ill.). Stace's third touchdown of the game from 10 yards out was the difference as ODU won for the second straight week against a team ranked in the top five. At the wide receiver position, Stace found the end zone on the ground from 26 yards out in the second quarter. His 66-yard touchdown catch at the end of the third quarter capped a 35-0 scoring burst by the Panthers. Stace, who ranks ninth in the NAIA with 7.0 catches/game, finished the day with 176 receiving yards on 11 catches (16.0 yards/catch) and three touchdowns (1 rushing).
