KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The sixth 2007 NAIA weekly football awards were handed out and these student-athletes were honored: Derek Doerfler of Baker (Kan.) was named NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week, Grant Mosier of Northwestern (Iowa) was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week and Bernard Payton of Malone (Ohio) was named NAIA Offensive Player of the Week, for the week ending on Sunday, Oct. 14.
Doerfler, a 5-11, 211 lb. junior placekicker from Lee's Summit, Mo., repeats as the NAIA Special Teams Player after he hit on three 50-plus yard field goals. In Baker's 16-14 road win at then-No. 24 Evangel, Doerfler connected on field goals from 53 yards, 52 and 50. In the process, he set the school record for most field goals made in a season with 15. He leads NAIA with 15 field goals and 2.1 field goals made per game.
Mosier, a 5-11, 173 lb. sophomore defensive back from Clarinda, Iowa, tied a Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) record with three interceptions. He also set up the game's first score with a fumble recovery on the game's second play. He posted six total tackles and was part of a Red Raider defense that forced six turnovers in the 35-13 victory over Dana (Neb.). Mosier is tied for fourth in the country in total interceptions with five.
Payton, a 6-1, 205 lb. senior running back broke two Malone scoring records in helping the Pioneers to a 42-35 overtime win over rival Walsh (Ohio). His five touchdowns (4 rushing, 1 receiving) and 30 points scored broke the school best in both categories. Overall, he rushed for 221 yards on 36 carries (6.1 ypc) and caught eight passes for 116 yards (14.5 ypc) to total 337 yards of total offense. His fifth touchdown was the difference maker in overtime. He has now rushed for triple digits in three straight games and he continued his hot streak against Walsh. Last year, Payton set a school-record with 277 rushing yards against WU. On the season, Payton ranks 13th in NAIA rushing with 108.8 yards/game.
