LANGSTON, Okla. -- The 16th-ranked Langston (Okla.) University Lions didn’t disappoint the nearly 12,000 fans that came to celebrate Homecoming as they defeated the 8th-ranked Northwestern Oklahoma State University Rangers 28-14 yesterday (Oct. 25).
The Rangers came in with one of the best offenses in the NAIA, but the Langston University defense contained NWOSU’s offense, holding them to only 289 yards of total offense. The Lions, however, posted 444 yards of total offense led by senior quarterback Danny Lowery and sophomore running back Carlos Ross. Lowery was 12 of 20 passing for 236 yards and one touchdown. Lowery also had a big 21 yard run giving him a career high 257 yards of total offense. Ross ran for 152 yards on 21 carries with two touchdowns on the day.
Defensively, the Lions didn’t give the Rangers much room to move on the ground. NWOSU had only 55 yards rushing for the game. The senior laden defense was led by Brandon Kennard, a senior from Lawton, Okla. Kennard finished with eight tackles and three sacks. Five of Kennard’s tackles were for a loss of 29 yards. In all, the Lions defense sacked Billy Barefield, the NWOSU quarterback, seven times on the day.
Barefield finished with 234 yards on 21 of 34 passing and one touchdown, but did not gain any positive yardage on the ground. He finished with -39 yards rushing. Barefield had been averaging 213 yards per game passing and 77.5 yards per game on the ground. The Rangers’ Rocky Lee led all defensive players with 15 tackles.
The Lions will stay at home next week when they face Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Kick-off for the game is set for 2:00 p.m.
