SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- It seems as if there’s no slowing down the Sioux Falls (S.D.) defense.
The No. 2-ranked Cougars (8-0, 8-0 GPAC) completed another masterful performance, shutting out the No. 8-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) College Red Raiders (7-2, 7-2 GPAC), 19-0, Saturday afternoon at Bob Young Field.
The Cougars played in front of 3, 493 fans, the largest crowd to see a game in two years at Bob Young Field, which opened in 2007 at the USF Sanford Health Sports Complex.
For the game, they held the Raiders to negative four yards, and minus-22 rushing. In four home games this season, the Cougars have allowed zero points and a total of 120 yards (30 ypg).
They also recorded four sacks, including two by senior linebacker Demetrius Washington (Detroit, Mich.), while Kyle Cummings (Buffalo, Wyo.) intercepted Cary Overholt (Highland, Ca.) late in the first half, setting up USF’s first touchdown.
Offensively, Lorenzo Brown (Bristol, Conn.) had an efficient day, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led the receivers, catching five passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, while junior tailback Ryan Lowmiller (Crystal Lake, Ill.) gained 63 yards on the ground.
After Brown was stuffed on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line in the first quarter, the defense got the Cougars on the board, as they tackled running back Kyle Ochsner (Saronville, Neb.) in the end zone, achieving a safety and making the score 2-0.
The Cougars added to their lead in the second quarter, going on a 17 play, 65-yard drive, capped off by a Matt Lindgren (Clark, S.D.) 24-yard field goal, giving them a 5-0 lead with 5:08 to play in the half. Cummings then picked off Overholt at the Raider 44-yard line, and six plays later, Brown found Anderson in the right side of the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown, making it 12-0 with 33 seconds remaining.
Early in the third quarter, the Cougars put a stamp on the victory. The Raiders’ Nathan Kuik (West Fargo, N.D.) had his punt blocked, which was recovered by Joe Moen (Cheyenne, Wyo.) at the six-yard line. One play later, Brown threw his second touchdown of the day, this one to Scott LeBrun (Dell Rapids, S.D.), pushing the advantage to 19-0.
It was a special day for the Cougars, as they celebrated the 1988 Sioux Falls College Cougar football team at halftime. They were the first team in school history to make the playoffs.
Next up for the Cougars is a road affair against Dordt College in the Defenders inaugural football season. The kickoff is set for next Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa at 1:00 p.m.
