Senior quarterback Craig Fobbe of Morningside College (Iowa) broke the NAIA record for single season passing yards during the Mustangs' 54-21 quarterfinal victory against Evangel University (Mo.).
Fobbe passed for a school-record 501 yards in the win, raising his season total to 4,627 yards to break the national record of 4,616 yards set in 1995 by Jon Kitna of Central Washington University. Fobbe was just 57 yards shy of the NAIA FCS single-game record of 558 yards passing.
Fobbe, who previously held Morningside's single-game record of 476 yards, passed for five touchdowns in the record-setting win against Evangel, and established a new school mark for total offense with 508 yards.
For his efforts, Fobbe was honored as the game's Offensive Player of the Game. Each NAIA Football Championship Series game awards an Offensive and Defensive Player of the Game, selected by media and press box staff. Evangel's Cedric Dewberry was named the Defensive Player of the Game.
The third-ranked Mustangs will take a 12-0 record into next Saturday's NAIA Semifinals against #2 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) in at Fort Wayne. Three-time defending national champion and top-ranked Carroll College (Mont.) will host fellow Great Plains Athletic Conference member #4 University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) in the other semifinal.
The national championship game will be played in Hardin County, Tenn. on December 17.
