Westmont College (Calif.) senior Nathan Fleming, Southern Oregon University distance runner Trevor Palmer and Kenneth Bowling from Oklahoma Christian University were all named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Track/Cross Country Team for the college division.
Fleming, a Biology and English major, set a personal record in the final javelin competition of his collegiate career. The senior threw 62.51m (205' 1") to claim fifth place at the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and his second All-American honor. Fleming was named to the first team with a 3.94 GPA.
A junior Psychology major, Palmer placed second in the 1,500-meter run at the 2006 NAIA Outdoor National Championships. The three-time All-American maintains a 3.78 GPA and is a third-team selection.
A two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete in track and cross country, Bowling is a Mathematics Education major and carries a 3.57 GPA. The junior, who reached All-American status four times during his career, was named to the third team.
To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the programs inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
