KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Soccer national weekly awards were announced for the week of Oct. 1-7 and Mario Rodriguez of Kansas Wesleyan was selected as the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week while Mike Wentzler of Berry (Ga.) was named the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week.
Rodriguez, a 5-8 junior forward from Diamond Bar, Calif., had a four-goal week in pivotal conference action for Kansas Wesleyan. In the 5-3 home win against Friends (Kan.), the No. 2-ranked team in Region IV, Rodriguez went for two goals. He put home his second goal of the match in the 86th minute to put the game out of reach. Last Saturday, Mario again scored a pair of goals in the 3-0 shut-out of McPherson (Kan.), ranked No. 3 in the region. He helped Kansas Wesleyan improve its season record to 8-3-2 and a conference-best 4-0-1. Rodriguez ranks in the top 10 nationally in goals scored (1.08).
Wentzler, a 6-3 senior goalkeeper from Duluth, Ga., played a key role in No. 7 Berry wrapping up the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) crown. He made seven saves in the 3-2 double overtime win over then-No. 6 Lee (Tenn.). Prior to that, he notched his fifth shut-out of the year in the 8-0 victory over Faulkner (Ala.). For the week, Wentzler totaled 11 saves in 195 minutes.
