LAKE WALES, Fla. –  Jaime Garzon and Daniel Scully both scored in the second half of the matchup with the #9 Embry-Riddle University Eagles to help the Royals defeat the Eagles 2-1 and to catapult them to first place in The Sun Conference.  With the win the Royals improve to 8-4-1, 5-4-1 The Sun Conference, Embry-Riddle is now 6-3-3, 3-2-1 The Sun Conference.

The first half saw the two teams’ battle for possession with the Eagles outshooting the Royals 7-6. Both teams played strong defense going into the half tied at nil.

The Royals were the first to strike in the second half with Garzon dribbling up the field through defenders to score the first goal of the game, one minute into the second half.  Scully scored his goal in the 54th minute off a double assist from Michael Alvarado and Mauricio Castano to extend the Royal lead to 2-0. Down by two, the Eagles quickly regrouped and cut the lead in half the following minute  on a goal from JL Wilson, who was assisted on a corner kick by Ryan Woods.  That would be the last shot the Eagles took for the rest of the night as the Royals defense tightened up to secure the lead.

Sophomore reserve goalie Robert Highley  got the start for injured starter Josh Havens and did a fine job in the goal. Highley played all 90 minutes, allowing one goal and making three saves.

The Royals return to action on Friday, October 17 when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on conference opponent Savannah College of Art & Design.
