KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Soccer national weekly awards were announced for the week of Oct. 8-14 and Carlos Ortiz of Graceland (Iowa) was selected as the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week while Andrew Varns of Brescia (Ky.) was named the NAIA National Offensive Player of the Week.

Ortiz, a 6-4, sophomore goaltender from Bogota, Columbia extended his scoreless streak in front of the net to 580 minutes. He notched his fifth and sixth straight shut-outs, first with a 2-0 blanking of MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) and then a 1-0 win at NCAA Division I Western Illinois on Sunday. Overall, he had eight saves in two games for the third-ranked Yellowjackets of Graceland.

Varns, a 6-1, senior forward from Scheffield, England went for eight goals, three assists and 19 points in a three-game stretch for Brescia. In the 5-4 win over Georgetown (Ky.), Varns had a hat-trick, including the game-winner. He also posted a pair of goals and the game-winner at Mountain State. He helped Brescia clinch the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) regular season championship.
