COLUMBIA, Ky. -- A pair of former Lindsey Wilson College men’s soccer student-athletes were on display to a national audience on Thursday night at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C.
New England Revolution’s Kheli Dube and D.C. United’s Boyzzz Khumalo played in Major League Soccer’s Primetime Thursday on ESPN2. D.C. United scored a pair of unanswered goals to win 2-1.
Dube -- who assisted on the Revolution’s goal -- is considered a MLS Rookie of the Year candidate with four goals and four assists this season. He has attempted 29 shots, including 13 on goal, this season after being selected by the Revolution in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft with the eighth overall pick.
Dube played at Lindsey Wilson in 2004 and 2005 before transferring to Coastal Carolina. He helped Lindsey Wilson to the 2005 national title with a goal in a 4-1 win over Azusa Pacific University in Daytona Beach. The title was Lindsey Wilson’s seventh in the program’s history.
In his two seasons, Dube helped the Blue Raiders to a 44-3-2 record, including 23-1 in the championship season.
Khumalo has a goal and an assist in five games since signing with D.C. on Sept. 12. Prior to signing with the United, Khumalo was named to the United Soccer League Second Division’s All-League Team. He led the Riverhounds with six goals in 20 games this season.
Khumalo -- the NAIA National Player of the Year as a freshman in 2001 -- ended tonight’s match with a shot on goal.
He helped the Blue Raiders to the 2001 national title with a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Auburn Montgomery University in Bowling Green, Ky. In his two seasons, Khumalo was twice named NAIA First Team All-American while helping the Blue Raiders to a two-year 44-4-1 record.
Dube and Khumalo are two of three former Blue Raiders playing in the MLS. Tyrone Marshall is a 10-year veteran of the MLS and currently plays with the Toronto FC.
