Rio Grande, Ohio - For the second straight season Roberts Wesleyan College was able to get the best of the University of Rio Grande on the soccer pitch. This time it was a monumental upset as the top ranked RedStorm lost to the visiting Raiders, 1-0 on Friday afternoon at Evan Davis Field.
Rio Grande (12-1-1, 6-1-1 AMC) out-shot Roberts Wesleyan (11-2, 6-2 AMC), 16-10 and 7-4 in shots on goal, but could not get the ball to go into the net.
Rio had four chances clang off the crossbar or one of the side posts and sophomore forward Ederson Lopes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was denied on a penalty kick in the second half.
The lone goal of the game came in the 66th from RWC’s Femi Arogundade. He was assisted by Dustin Teddick. The Raiders slammed the door defensively after that and the near misses racked up for Rio Grande as the clocked ticked away and No. 1 fell.
Roberts’ goalkeeper Brion Ehman was outstanding in the net, as he recorded seven saves in collecting the shutout. Rio senior’s goalkeeper Nate Walzer (Woodbury, CT) registered three saves.
Roberts Wesleyan now becomes a player for the American Mideast Conference championship while that ambition for the RedStorm took a significant hit.
Rio will get the opportunity to respond to the defeat quickly as they play host to Houghton College on Saturday night. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
Stretch Internet will have play-by-play coverage beginning at approximately 5:55 p.m.
