MOBILE, Ala. - The 25th-ranked University of Mobile men's soccer team picked up a big victory Tuesday, toppling the 6th-ranked Belhaven College Blazers in a GCAC battle.
The teams traded goals in the first half, as Mobile’s Matt Watts struck first with a goal in the 17th minute when he sent a cross from 40 yards out that kept sailing, right over the goalkeeper’s head into the far corner.
Belhaven’s Juan Rodriguez tied it up when he headed home a free kick from David McKay in the 33rd minute.
After the even first half, the final period was a different story with two Mobile goals. Geert Slits provided the game-winner in the 65th minute when he took a feed from Ruben Diaz and blasted the ball from the top of the 18-yard box into the back of the net.
Mohammed Habibzi added insurance for Mobile in the 83rd minute when he took a feed from Slits in the 18-yard box and punched it in.
The win by the Rams snapped the Blazers’ 12-game winning streak. In that streak, Belhaven’s defense had allowed only 3 goals, a total equaled by Mobile in just 90 minutes of action Tuesday.
Jason Williams grabbed 4 saves in the victory for the Rams. Mobile (7-4-2, 2-1) next plays at Auburn-Montgomery Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 pm. Belhaven falls to 13-1-1, 1-1.
