WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Alvaro Romo and Tom Stringer led a three goal comeback in the final half hour as Northwood University stunned No. 9 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Eagles (7-4-3, 4-3-1 The Sun Conference) had gone ahead on Ryan Woods' goal with 15 seconds left in the first half. After teammate Marco Harleman laid the ball off for him, the sophomore drilled a bullet into the upper left corner of the net from the edge of the area to give ERAU a 1-0 lead at the break.
Embry-Riddle doubled their lead not long after the second half restart. Joe Yoffe was judged to have been taken down in the box, and AJ Barrett stepped up and converted from the spot.
Andy Robertson started the comeback with a key save - ERAU sophomore Sam Litchfield found himself in acres of space, but Northwood's sophomore goalie did well to stop him. Soon after, Alvaro Romo dribbled down the left wing and found Jere Kolhemainen in the penalty area. The junior's backheel went right to the feet of Joonas Siikala, who tapped it in to halve the deficit.
Romo leveled the score with less than five minutes to play, as Kolhemainen's shot was snuffed by Eagles' goalie Viktor Bergstrand, but Romo was on hand to pop in the rebound.
Northwood (10-2-1, 6-2-1 The Sun Conference) won the game not even two minutes later. Anders Sulisalo's corner kick bounced one time, and Stringer side footed it for his fourth goal in three games.
The win leaves Northwood tied with Warner Southern College at the top of The Sun Conference standings with a 6-2-1 mark. A Northwood win over Webber International on October 29 combined with a WSC loss to St. Thomas on October 23 will give the Seahawks the conference title and homefield advantage in the conference tournament.
Before the game in Babson Park, Northwood will play cross town foe Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday, October 25 at 1 p.m.
