GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- A golden goal in the 103rd min of the game by freshman Luciano Lorca led the Thomas (Ga.) Night Hawks (7-6-1) to victory over NAIA #17 Shorter (Ga.) College (8-5-2) on Friday (Oct. 24) and snapped a two game losing skid.
Both teams battled back and forth, exchanging opportunities and possession of the ball in the first but took a scoreless tie into the break. Shorter opened up the scoring four minutes into the second half and continued to push for the second of the evening but the TU defense stepped up time and time again to shut the door.
Sophomore Alex Fleming tied the game at one with an unassisted goal in the 23rd minute and helped shift the momentum back in the favor of TU. However, the Night Hawks were unable to find the game winner.
The teams battled through the first ten minute period of golden goal over time and three minutes into the second Lorca received a pass from freshman Jonah Mukada and slid the ball past the SC goalkeeper for the game winner.
"We battled extremely hard for that victory", said TU head coach Ricky Zambrano. "I thought our midfield and backline did an extremely good job defensively. Cormac Finn and Jan Feldman anchored a solid defensive unit today. In the attack I thought we could have been better and put away some chances that we created in regulation time."
TU continues their road trip tomorrow with another neutral site meeting in Gainesville, GA against Reinhardt College. Kick off is set for 4PM.
