OLATHE, Kan. - In its first appearance in the NAIA National Championship tournament, No. 4 Ohio Dominican got on the scoreboard early and knocked off No. 13 Maine-Fort Kent, 7-0. ODU (19-2-0) will advance to the quarterfinals while the Bengals dropped their first game of the year and will end the season 21-1-0 record.
Junior forward Scott Shrewsbury found the back of the net from 20 yards out 37 seconds into the game to give the Panthers a 1-0 advantage. Eddie Hertsenberg (19:50), Joey Held (25:51) and David Bauer (33.56) all added goals in the first half for ODU. Held's second goal of the game in the 39th minute gave the Panthers 5-0 halftime lead.
ODU added two more in the second half when Zach Roberts scored in the 67th minute and Devin Cowan found the net at 78:19.
The Panthers' seven goals are the most by a team in the national championship tournament game since 2002 when Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) defeated Martin Luther (Minn.), 9-0.
Ohio Dominican will advance to the quarterfinals and will face the winner of No. 5 Simon Fraser (B.C.) and No. 12 Park (Mo.) on Friday, Nov. 17 at noon.
