DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- No. 20-seed McKendree College (Ill.) fell behind early in the first match of the 47th Annual NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship, but scored four unanswered goals to record a decisive 4-1 upset victory against No. 13-seed Grand View College (Iowa). The tournament is being staged on the campus of Embry-Riddle University (Fla.), November 16-22.
McKendree (16-5-3), the Region V champion, extended its unbeaten streak to nine matches with the victory and will face No. 4-seed Auburn-Montgomery at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17. Grandview, which earned an at-large berth into the event, ends its season with an 18-4-2 record.
The Bearcats outshot Grand View 18-12 (8-5 in shots on goal) and a commanding 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Grand View's Ernad Jaskic gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead 4:02 into the match with his third goal of the year on feeds from Lyall Menzies and Rami Ali.
Just over three minutes later McKendree's Nicolas Mosca scored his 11th goal of the year to tie the match off a cross by Santiago Duran at the 7:13 mark.
Tim Dew recorded his third goal of the year to give the Bearcats their first lead of the contest dribbling through two defenders and deposited it in the corner of the net in the 16th minute.
Santiago Duran's ninth goal of the season gave McKendree (16-5-3) a two-goal cushion with the first marker of the second half in the 54th minute from Jay Stremlau and Ben Stimson.
Matt Gruenert closed out the scoring for the Bearcats with his second of the year from Ryan Miller at the 72:29 mark.
After allowing the early goal, Santiago Hampton recorded four saves to earn the victory in net for McKendree, while Grand View's Cameron McKay allowed all four goals and recorded four saves.
