Budnyy's Game-Winning Header Gives Azusa Pacific 2-1 OT Victory

Nov. 18, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- Fifth-seeded Azusa Pacific University's (Calif.) Andriy Budnyy nailed a game winning header 35 seconds into the overtime, as AUM edged No. 12-seed Graceland University (Iowa) 2-1 in the 47th Annual NAIA Men's Soccer National Tournament held on Friday at host Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Soccer Stadium.

In the 17th minute, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Brandon Stirm served a ball into Sven Simon who headed home his 10th goal of the season.
APU's defense put forth a stellar first-half performance holding Graceland to just two shots (none of which were on goal).

The Yellowjackets tied the score 1-1 however, in the 75th minute as Bret Loving received the ball through a maze of players and tipped it into the left side of the net past Azusa Pacific goalkeeper James Crawford.

With one minute left in regulation, GU had two shots occur in a box scramble, but were unable to capitalize sending the match into overtime.

Just 35 seconds into OT, Budnyy converted a header for his 18th of the year and fifth game-winning scorer on a cross by Ryan Cheek cross to end the contest.
Azusa Pacific improves to 18-4 and heads to the quarterfinals where they will face fourth-seeded University of Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday, November 19 at 12 p.m.
