FRESNO, Calif. - (box score) The University of Maine-Fort Kent and Notre Dame (Ohio) College played to a 2-2 draw after two overtimes in the fifth game (Dec. 2) of the 50th Annual NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship at the final site, hosted by Fresno Pacific (Calif.) University. Maine-Fort Kent advances to the Quarterfinals courtesy of winning in penalty kicks by a 5-4 margin. No. 10 seed UMFK (20-0-2) will play No. 2 seed Rio Grande (Ohio) (17-3-1) on Wednesday (Dec. 3) at 11:30 a.m. PST. Rio defeated Madonna (Mich.) 2-1 yesterday in the Second Round.
Maine-Fort Kent took the early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute off a goal from Andre Anderson, his 26th on the year. The assist went to Keith Williams II. Notre Dame would eventually take a 2-1 lead thanks to a pair of goals from Luke Holmes. The freshman forward leads the team this year in goals scored, now with 17. His second marker handed NDC a 2-1 advantage in the 57th minute.
UMFK's leading goal scorer this year, Williams II notched his 29th goal, in the 70th minute to knot the game at 2-2.
Both teams played through two scoreless overtime periods before the shoot-out. The Bengals were able to advance by scoring on their sixth shoot-out kick. Overall, UMFK scored goals on five of their shoot-out kicks while NDC was four-for-six.
Maine-Fort Kent goalie Giovanni Sinclair notched his 15th win on the year.
No. 7 seed Notre Dame ends its season at 19-2-1 overall.
