The first-ranked Lindenwood wrestling team won the NAIA Eastern Regional Championship on Friday. The title, won on the Lions' home court, was the third straight for the Lindenwood wrestling program.
The Lions scored 175 points, finishing 37 points ahead of the third-ranked team in the country, Campbellsville (Ky.). Other team scores were: 12th-ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) 113, eighth-ranked McKendree (Ill.) 112, Notre Dame (Ohio) 74, 18th-ranked Cumberland (Tenn.) 54, 17th-ranked Missouri Baptist 40.5, and King (Tenn.) 20.5.
All 12 Lindenwood wrestlers advanced to the semifinals of their respective weight classes and eight advanced to the championship match. Josh Sampo (125 pounds), Randy Vanderveen (165 pounds) and John Salter (174 pounds) all won regional titles.
Lions who came in second were Dennis Kakrah (125), Jake Dieffenbach (165), Matt Cauley (174), Matt Juncal (197) and Lance Shunia (HWT). Third-place showings went to Ryan Moyer (133), Mark Dickman (149) and Kyle Frawley (184), and Jason Moreno (133) finished fourth.
All 12 Lindenwood wrestlers have advanced to the NAIA Championships. That meet will take place on March 2-3 in Sioux City, Iowa.
