SD School of Mines' Jennie Malone reaches 1,000 points

March 7, 2008

RAPID CITY --- South Dakota School of Mines senior standout Jennie Malone recently finished her college basketball career as a Lady Hardrocker, earning a huge accomplishment in the process.

The 5-foot-10-inch Industrial Engineering major from Rapid City, S.D., breached the 1,000-point mark, scoring 1,003 during her four years at SDSM&T.

"Jennie has a nice touch as a shooter even after developing a slight knee injury the past couple seasons," said Hardrocker head coach Barb Felderman. "She worked hard once she hit the court and established herself as one of the top shooters in the conference."

Malone was very instrumental in the Lady `Rockers success the past four seasons. She has been a part of the 2005 Dakota Athletic Championship team which advanced to the NAIA National Tournament and was a big factor in making the DAC tournament championship game a year ago as well.

Malone is a two-sport athlete at South Dakota School of Mines also competing as a standout volleyball player. The past four seasons, Malone has completed the volleyball season before starting the basketball season, missing a portion of the hoops schedule.

"Jennie always came into our season late --- because of volleyball," Felderman said. "If not for that she would have certainly reached (over 1,000 points) sooner."

Malone has earned numerous awards during both her volleyball and basketball careers. Last season in basketball, Malone was named the Rapid City female college athlete of the year and was named to the All DAC third team and was a DAC scholar athlete as well.

"Jennie was not only an exceptional player on offense but also excelled on the defensive side of the ball," Felderman said.

Malone finished the 2007-08 season with 267 points, 107 assists and 75 steals. For her career, she tallied 210 steals, 249 assists and 293 total rebounds.
