SIOUX CITY, Iowa - No. 4 seed Northwestern (IA) advanced to the second round with a 98-69 victory over No. 5 seed Daemen (N.Y.) in the first round of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
Northwestern (24-8) opened up a 23-point cushion heading into intermission behind 47.1 percent shooting in the first half. The Red Raiders spent quality time at the charity strip during the opening stanza, hitting 16-of-21 from the free throw line.
Daemen (25-7) was unable to get any closer than18 in the second half despite shooting 48.1 percent from the floor. The Wildcats were paced by Germany Jackson who went 11-of-19 from the field en route to a game-high 27 points. Others in double figures for Daemen were Mary Kate Wilson (16) and Alison LaPoint. LaPoint finished with a double double as she also dished out 10 assists.
Deb Remmerde, the last year's player of the year, played 23 minutes and scored 17 points. Remmerde was questionable coming into the game after sustaining an injury earlier in the week during practice. Amy Larson led the Red Raiders in scoring with 20 points while Jaime Hoegh added a double double (16 points, 11 rebounds). Miranda Boekhout added 13 points and six assists.
Northwestern will play No. 1 seed College of the Ozarks in the second round on Friday at 5:45 p.m.
