SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Three different records were broken or tied during the quarterfinals the 15th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship. The day also saw two-time runner up and top ranked Cedarville bounced from the tournament.
In the second game of the day Brittany Smart of Cedarville Unviersity (Ohio) set a new tournament record for points in a game with 47. She was 17 of and tied the mark for field-goals in a game with 17 of 29 from the field including 4 of 10 from beyond the arc. The 17 field goals tied the tournament record for field goals in a game. Despite the effort her team was defeated, 77-76 by Northwestern.
Northwestern College (Iowa) was led by Deb Remmerde who hit the game winner with eight seconds left on the clock. Remmerde tallied 42 points in the game and set the record for three-point field goals made in a tournament. She currently has 20, eclipsing the old mark of 17 held by two different players. The win by Northwestern assures that there will be two new teams in this year's championship. The Red Raiders will meet Hastings in the 6:00 p.m. game on Monday.
Hastings College (Neb.) also advanced with a 55-41win over Dakota State Unviersity (S.D.). Dakota State led by one, 8-7, after a slow-paced opening five minutes. Hastings picked things up in the next 6:38, going on a 16-0 run to take a 22-8 lead. The Hastings Broncos benefited from 11 turnovers by Dakota State in the opening half, converting them into 11 points en route to a 31-17 halftime lead.
Hastings was paced in scoring by Stacy Svoboda who finished with 13 points. Svoboda who also added nine rebounds, scored 10 of her team leading points in the second half. Lynnze Martinsen finished with 11 and was the only other Bronco in double figures. In all nine different Hastings players scored.
The University of Saint Francis (Ind.) advanced to the semifinals cruising to an 83-51 victory over Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) The Lady Cougars shot a blistering 59.3 percent from the field in the first half en route to a 49-21 lead at intermission. Saint Francis continues to increase their tournament record of most all-time victories which is now at 20 in 10 appearances.
Cardinal Stritch hit a three pointer on the opening possession took take the early. That would prove to be the only lead for the Wolves who shot just 30 percent for the game. Five of the nine players who scored for Saint Francis were in double figures. Megan Dossen led the charge with 22 points, going 7 of 12 from the field including 5 of 7 from beyond the arc.
In the final game of the night College of the Ozarks (Mo.) picked up a 73-64 overtime victory against Benedictine College (Kan.). Ozarks freshman Rebekah Howard drained a three from the right baseline as time expired to force the extra period. It was the first three-point field goal she had attempted in her career.
In the overtime Ozarks outscored Benedictine 13-4 to move onto the semifinals against Saint Francis.
The 32-team, single elimination tournament continues on Saturday, March 11th with the quarterfinal round of games. Monday, March 13 is the semifinal round. The tournament concludes Tuesday, March 14 with the championship game at 8:30 p.m.
