SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - Four players reached double figures for fifth seed MidAmerica Nazarene University as they downed fourth-seeded Daemen College (N.Y.), 76-57, in the opening round of the17th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
MidAmerica Nazarene (25-10) went on a 10 to nothing run midway through the first half to open up a 23-12 advantage with 8:42 remaining. During the run for the Lady Pioneers four different players scored.
The Wildcats of Daemen (22-8) pulled to within five with 4:41 left in the first, but that proved to be as close as they would get. MidAmerica Nazarene answered with another run, this time out-scoring Daemen 18-6 to finish the half. In the second half the
The Lady Pioneers were led by senior Jenna Matson. Matson finished with a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Also reaching double digits were Taylor Ford (20), Ashley Patterson (13) and JoNel Henning (11). MidAmerica Nazarene also forced 23 Damen turnovers.
Daemen was paced by Sarah Bogardus who notched a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 10 boards. Mary Kate Wilson was the only other Wildcat to reach double digits, scoring 16.
MidAmerica Nazarene will take on the winner of College of the Ozarks (Mo.) and Maine - Fort Kent on Friday at Noon.
