Day 2 Recap

SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - The second day of the 17th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa, saw much of the same lop sided action as the first day.

The day opened as No. 4 seed Dakota State University picked up first round victory over fifth seed Ohio Dominican University, 76-73 Dakota State clawed their way back to victory after trailing by as many as 19. Dakota state was led by Laura Tewes, who led all scorers with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field along with pulling down nine rebounds for Dakota State. Dakota state will now take on Bethel (Ind.) on Friday morning.

No. 1 seed Bethel College (Ind.) picked up a first round victory over eighth seed Northwood University, 73-41. Northwood held a 26-25 halftime advantage over Bethel but in the second half was held to 11 percent shooting from the field (3-for-20). Bethel rode a 17 to two run during the first ten minutes of the second half to seal the victory.

Third seed Benedictine College (Kan.) advanced to the second round with a 79-57 victory over sixth seed Aquinas (Mich.). Benedictine led the game from start to finish, opening the game on an 11 to two run. The lead was cut to a bucket on two occasions, but eventually the Ravens just pulled away down the stretch. Abby Winder led three players in double digits for Benedictine with 18 points. Leah Stuhlsatz chipped in with 17 and Courtney Edmonds had 11. Edmonds was 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Benedictine moves on to take on Hastings (Neb.) in the second round.

Second seed Hastings College (Neb.) cruised to a 76-41 over seventh seed King College (Tenn.). Five different players reached double figures for Hastings led by Breanna Lien with 16. Kay Broekemeier pitched in with 15 while Rachel Isherwood and Heather McKeon added 11 points each. Haruka Yamashita had a game-high seven assists to go along with eight points. In all, 11 different players scored for the Broncos.

Fourth seed Cornerstone University (Mich.) held on for 64-55 victory of the fifth seed, Sterling College Lady Warriors. Cornerstone (25-8) had to rally late to keep the game close then distanced themselves with free throws to earn the nine point victory. Cornerstone advances to take on Northwestern College (Iowa).

No. 1 seed Northwestern College (Iowa) cruised to a 97-48 victory over the eighth seed Holy Names (Calif.). Senior Debbie Remmerde led all scorers with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while going 6-for-7 from three-point land. Remmerde now sits sixth on the all-time scoring leader board with 222 career tournament points. Senior Amy Larson added 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting and Senior Crystal Algood netted the double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Raiders.

Third seed Black Hills State University (S.D.) squeaked out a 63-61 victory of the six seed, University of Rio Grand. Rio Grande chipped away at the Black Hills lead and was able to cut the deficit to two points with :25 remaining. The Redwomen were able to get an open shot attempt that would have tied the game with :02 remaining but the shot fell short ending any comeback hopes. Black Hills State moves on to take on upset minded Eastern Oregon.

No. 7 seed Eastern Oregon (25-5) scratched their way to a 52-49 upset of No. 2 seed Cardinal Strich (26-5). The two teams played even for thirty five minutes in the physical contest, with neither side able to distance themselves by more than six points and the score being tied seven times, before Eastern Oregon's Sheena Henderson pulled down an offensive rebound and was able to get the put back to fall to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.
