SIOUX CITY, Iowa. - No. 1 seed Northwestern (Iowa) came out strong and cruised to an 86-57 victory over Cornerstone (Mich.) in the second round of the17th annual NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa.
Northwestern (32-2) began the second round game with a 24 to two run and never looked back. Senior Debbie Remmerde scored 30 points in the first half alone, going 10-for-12 from the field and 6-for-7 from three point land as the Red Raiders already had a 49-20 halftime lead.
Remmerde finished the game with 36 points on 11-of-15 shooting. Her performance was one that was one of the All-Time scoring out puts in tournament history. Remmerde also moved up to third All-Time in career points in the tournament with 258 in just eight career games.
Along with Remmerde, Amy Larson scored in double digits for the Red Raiders with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field.
Cornerstone (25-9) was led offensively by Kara Overbeek with 13 points while Jenna Plewes and Ali Keag each added 10 points.
Northwestern advances to the quarterfinals to take on the winner of the Eastern Oregon vs. Black Hills State (S.D.) at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
