ATHERTON, Calif. - The Menlo College (Calif.) women's basketball team recently completed the 2nd annual "Shoot For The Cure" Free-Throw-A-Thon on October 3. The team selected the San Francisco Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation as the recipient of 2006 fundraising efforts.
Led by senior Amy Castillo, who raised $888.50, the team raised a total of $2,586.20. Each player had a fundraising goal of $100 dollars, to be comprised of either flat donations or pledges per free throw made. The players shot 100 free throws each, with junior Kelci Fushikoshi, knocking down 93. For her efforts, Fushikoshi raised $219.65.
"Every player surpassed their fundraising goal. All 13 of them also enhanced their sense of social responsibility, empathy, and teamwork. I am really proud of this team," head coach Caitlin Collier said.
Last year, the Menlo women's basketball team raised nearly $5,000 for the American Red Cross and the victims of Hurricane Katrina. They were awarded the 2005-2006 NAIA Champions of Character Team Award at the national championships in Sioux City, Iowa.
The women's basketball team will open the season in Rapid City, South Dakota with a 5 p.m. match up versus Black Hills State State University (S.D.) November 17.
