JACKSON, Tenn. - Seventh-seeded Westminster College (Utah) held second-seeded Point Loma Nazarene University (Calif.) to just 18 second-half points en route to a 53-39 victory in the final game of the first round at the 27th Annual NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Championship at Oman Arena.
In the lowest-scoring game of the first round, neither team shot better than 26 percent from the field, but Westminster was nearly flawless at the free throw line, sinking 16-of-17 attempts, including 12-of-13 in the second half to seal the victory.
After Kerra Sutton-Wodarski `s three-pointer with seven and a half minutes to play gave Point Loma Nazarene a 33-31 lead, the Sea Lions were held to just one field goal the rest of the game as Westminster finished the game on a 22-6 run.
Shannon Evans scored a game-high 20 points for Westminster, and Alicia Haberle added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Point Loma Nazarene was led by Sutton-Wodarski's 13 points. Colleen Planeta grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds.
With the win, Westminster improves to 22-11 overall and moves on to a second-round matchup with Southern Nazarene tomorrow night at 9:45 p.m. Point Loma Nazarene finishes the season with a 24-8 record.
