Vanguard (Calif.) Shoots Past Cumberlands (Ky.) in First Round Win

March 20, 2008

JACKSON, Tenn. - Vanugard (Calif.) University led wire-to-wire in their 75-62 opening round win over the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) in the 28th NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Tournament.  The Lions of Vanguard forced 26 turnovers, which turned into 23 points to help eliminate the Cumberlands.

Vanguard started the game with a 17-4 run, including the games first 12 points, and never looked back as the Lions improved to 25-5 on the season.  They held an 11-point advantage at the half, before stretching the lead to as many as 24 points, 69-45, with 4:36 left in the game.

Vanguard's inside presence posted 40 points in the paint, and also produced 28 trips to the free-throw line, where the Lions were good for 20 makes.  They also were an efficient 3-of-8 from behind the three-point arc.

Cumberlands shot 29 of their 60 field goal attempts from behind the arc, but only were able to convert eight times for just 27-percent.  The Patriots also make just one trip to the free-throw line in the game (0-2).

The Lions were led by Melissa Cook with a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the first half.  Jessica Richter added 14 points, while Lauren Gregory and Sarah Boyd posted 13 and 12 points respectively.

Cumberlands ends their season with a 23-9 record.  The Patriots had great efforts from Amber Neace with 22 points and Crystal Taylor with 12 points and 13 rebounds.  Sonia Thompson added 10 points off the bench.

Vanguard advances to the second round on Friday, March 21 and will face winner of the Lambuth (Tenn.)/Xavier (La.) game at 4:30 pm.
