Trevecca's Van Atta Sets School Record in Win

Rome, Ga. - NAIA No. 4 Trevecca escaped with a 73-66 victory over Shorter College in Berry College Classic in Rome, Ga. Trevecca sophomore K.C. Van Atta hit a school record eight three-pointers in the game and finished with a game high 30 points.

 

Trevecca trailed 12-5 at the 15:30 mark of the first half. Trevecca rallied to take a 15-12 lead at the 11:21 mark. The run was fueled by a 10-0 Trojan run. With 7:43 on the first half clock TNU led 24-20. Shorter, the hometown team, went on an 18-0 run that gave the Eagles a 38-24 lead wtih :10 remaining in the half. K.C. Van Atta hit a three as time expired to end the run and make the halftime score 38-27 in favor of Shorter.

 

The Eagles fought hard to keep the Trojans in check in the second half and did a great job until the Trojans took their first lead (55-54) of the second half with 8:37 remaining. It was the first time TNU held the lead since the 5:50 mark of the first half. Trevecca took the lead (60-58) for good at the 7:07 mark on one of K.C. Van Atta's eight three-pointers. Trevecca picked up the win 73-66.

 

Van Atta's eight made three-pointers is one better than a pair of former Trojans. Hilary Howard and Leslie Golden shared the record with seven made three-pointers in a game. 

 

Van Atta led Trevecca with 30 points hitting eight of 14 from beyond the arc and added six assists. Abby Lawson added 17 points, six rebounds and a team high six assists. Angelica Sails had a team high eight rebounds and Jennifer Bognar had seven rebounds and five assists.   

 

As a team Trevecca was 25-of-60 (41.7%) from the field, 12-of-28 (42.8%) from beyond the arch, and 11-of-19 (58%) from the foul line. Each team had 38 rebounds, 18 turnovers, 25 made field goals, and 11 made free throws. The difference in the score was Trevecca hitting seven more three-pointers (12 to 5) and winning the points off of turnover battle 19-11.
